5 Things you need to assemble your own DIY Microgreens kit
Learning is good but implementing and enjoying its benefits is better.
NO BIG EQUIPMENT
NO MASTERY REQUIRED
NO BIG SPACE
NO EXPENSIVE
If you want to grow microgreens at home and do not know where to start, then in this story I am mentioning things which are easily available in the market or in your garden store. So lets start with the basic things.
TRAYS
Any container that holds the growing medium. For ex: Plastic Container. Plastic container is good because I tried different container like biodegradable and compostable food trays but the problem is within few days you will see fungal growth at the bottom because of water present in growing medium. Next I tried clay pots but if fungal issues arise then very difficult to wash and handle. so if you are beginner then I will suggest use plastic ones specially recycled ones.
In that container you need to bottom holed the tray and at the top side too so that seeds will get proper air circulation which will minimize the fungal growth. If you are growing through humidity dome formation method then no need to top holed as there you have to trap that heat. For weight method you need to bottom holed the trays and you need extra tray to hold the bottom water and top tray for weight.
You will get these trays in local shop or you can buy online too. In market already microgreen trays are available so you can buy online too.
GROWING MEDIUM
Growing medium that I prefer is cocopeat. You can also grow over tissue paper , muslin cloth , Cocomat, Soil or any easy available choice. Just make sure they are properly sanitized. Cocopeat you can buy online or find in nearby nursery.
SEEDS
You can use your kitchen stored seeds like fenugreek, dill, coriander, parsley, moong dal, flax seeds, chia seeds etc which are easily available in kitchen store. Try some of these but make sure they are not that old as old seeds are difficult to germinate. Buy fresh ones and then try. You can use any seeds from local market just make sure they are not chemically coated.
MIST BOTTLE & SCISSORS/KNIFE
To top water you can also use garden hose to top and bottom water. For bottom water you can use jug or bottom of mist bottle. Scissor to harvest the microgreens you can use knife if you are comfortable with that just keep out of reach of kids.
Cheap method: Take any plastic bottle ,make few holes in the cap, fill water and you can use as mist bottle.
SPACE
You can keep trays where they get proper sunlight and air circulation.
See so easy is that.
Its easy, fun & healthy process. You can try as a therapy process to relax your mind and keep out of stress zone. Try this with kids so they can bond with food and Nature.
Hope you find this helpful!
